The rise of aggressive Afrikaner nationalism and the attemps to reshape and re-engineer rural villages and to co-opt the traditional leaders were firecely resisted,there were massive explosions of violence against chiefs who collaborated with the apartheid state and spontaneous revolts against further intrusion into rural African life.
